Damask

"Woven cloth in solid-colours. Manufactured with yarns of the same colour in both warp and weft, the damask effect is obtained by emphasising shiny designs on the opaque background and vice versa through the weave effect. Of Chinese origin, by way of India and Persia it arrived in Damascus, which became the most important marketplace for the West. Used mostly in furnishings, it is also used in clothing when it comes back into fashion."
