Madras

From the name of the homonymous Indian city. The term can have different meanings. The original madras, made from hand-made canvas, was a lightweight fabric in canvas armor, very fine cotton, transparent as a veil. Today, the term basically refers to two types of fabric, one used in curtain upholstery, fabricated on English-style gauze frames or "fil coupé" technique, features radial elements and a soft hand. The best-known one, used in shirts, women's dresses and men's summer jackets, is a cotton fabric with striped designs, figured effects, but especially for paintings made of coloured yarn.
